AUBURN, AL (WSFA) -

Tuesday nights are usually pretty quiet at Toomers Corner after the football season, but on this night, Downtown Auburn was abuzz with talking about Gus Malzahn becoming the next head coach.

"My freshman year was the National Championship year and Gus Malzahn was an instrumental part of that," said David Gutierrez, a Junior.  "I'm hoping that excitement will come back."

Others say they're hoping Malzahn's hire will make the 2012 season a bad memory.

"Man it hurt, people just walking by all sad faced and depressed a lot of people gave up hope," said Henry Finley, an Auburn student who works Downtown.

"I don't want to have a losing team," said Megan Haynes, an Auburn student.  "I love Auburn no matter what, but it definitely makes it better when the football team's better."

For others, going back means the team won't move forward.

"I think it's kind of a band-aid hire. I don't think he's the figure that we need after a season like that," said Brady Smith, an Auburn Student.  "I think he'll do a good job with the offense, it will be interesting to see who he hires as a coordinator for the defense."

But Smith joined other fans in hoping Malzahn brings the program back to glory.
