COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The Muscogee County School Board ended a ten-hour executive session Wednesday in their search for a new superintendent.

The position has been open since July and former superintendent Dr. John Phillips Jr. was called out of retirement to fill the interim.

The board has narrowed the decision down to four candidates and will make their names available to the public when that number reaches three.

Board chair Cathy Williams was asked whether they are getting close to eliminating any of the finalists.

"It's really hard to say; we've decided that we're going to meet again. It's been a very long day.  The board members put everything into it and took it very seriously, so, we're going to try and take a break," said Williams.

Williams said the winning candidate will need five out of nine board member's votes to get the position, but she is hoping for a unanimous decision.

The role of superintendent is an important job because that person is in charge of the district's finances, in addition to other duties regarding curriculum and administration.

Over the next few days, the board members will have time to speak to each other in private to further discuss the interviews.

The next scheduled board meeting is December 10.
