GILBERT, AZ (CBS5) -

Gilbert police have arrested a woman for allegedly faking having cancer to get money.

Kelly Ann Wasko, 41, faces multiple felony charges of fraud and theft.

Wasko was arrested Monday after dropping off two of her children, ages 8 and 10, at school.

Wasko's caper began in December 2011 when she told an adult daughter living in Colorado that she had Hodgkin's lymphoma and needed a bone marrow transplant that her insurance policy would not cover.

"She told me that she lost her job. She had cancer," said neighbor Donna Fontaine. "I can't believe she would do that."

Her daughter built a Facebook fundraising page that collected more than $12,000 for Wasko.

The daughter, however, started to become suspicious after donating $1,000 of her own to her mother. When things weren't adding up, the daughter contacted authorities in Colorado, who contacted police in Gilbert.

Police said Wasko also defrauded an additional victim out of $8,000.

Wasko is in jail on $25,000 bond and has another court appearance scheduled for Dec. 10.
