GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

A sophomore at Maryvale High School was killed in a car accident Sunday morning, according to Glendale police.

Alexander Brizuela, 16, and Claudia Ontiveros, 23, were heading northbound on 67th Avenue at about 6:50 a.m. Sunday when they hit a light pole near Bethany Home Road, according to Glendale police spokesman Robert Yoder.

Brizuela was driving the 2008 Jeep Patriot that belonged to Ontiveros at the time of the crash.

Both Brizuela and Ontiveros were killed.

Friends of Brizuela said he was the quarterback at Maryvale High School.

"Alexander was a very young, talented player. He was one of the best quarterbacks Maryvale had," said Alex Baez. "I remember back in the day in the middle school days when we used to hang out. He was just a really nice guy."

"We were always playing. I know that he always had a smile on his face, being a kid," said Raymond Lizarraga.

Police do not yet know why the two crashed, but said speed and alcohol are being looked at.

The vehicle belonged to Ontiveros, police said.
