COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A Columbus man accused of killing a man in his SUV waived his rights to a trial Monday morning.

Robert Cantelli, 34, pled guilty to murder to avoid a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

A judge accepted his mentally-ill guilty plea and ordered him to serve life in prison with the possibility of parole in 30 years.

Authorities say Cantelli is accused of fatally shooting Joshua Hill in the backseat of his SUV two years ago. After the shooting, he reportedly drove to Seale, Alabama with the victim's body still in the SUV.

A public defender says Cantelli told police he used methamphetamine before the shooting.
