CHILTON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -
A mother accused of shooting her children in Chilton County pleaded guilty today to murder and attempted murder.
Ann Marie Campbell was originally charged with capital murder but the charge was downgraded as part of the plea deal.
Prosecutors are recommending that Campbell be sentenced to 30 years for the murder charge and 20 years for attempted murder, with those sentences running concurrently. The judge could decide to make the sentences run consecutively.
Campbell's sentencing date is set for Jan. 3 in Judge John Bush's courtroom.
The estate of Johnny Michael Campbell, the 11-year-old son who died in the shooting, has filed a civil suit against Chilton County DHR that personally names three DHR employees. Johnny Campbell's estate believes the boy should have been taken out of his mother's custody before the shooting happened, claiming that DHR was notified of alleged abuse more than a year before his death.
The State Department of Human Resources issued this statement about the case to FOX6 News Thursday:
"Ann Campbell is responsible for the death of her child. The judge in the lawsuit issued a protective order that prohibits us from discussing the case."
A trial for that civil suit case is set for July 22, 2013.
