Kyle Carter to transfer from UGA to Juco baseball program

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Former Columbus High baseball star Kyle Carter will leave the University of Georgia and transfer to a junior college it was revealed on Thursday.

The freshman outfielder/pitcher was suspended for 18 games by Bulldogs coach David Perno after his arrest for underage drinking in November. The suspension effectively covered a third of the college baseball season.

Richard Carter, Kyle's father, said over two dozen junior college baseball programs have offered a full-ride scholarship. Kyle is expected to choose a school sometime before the end of the year.

Front-runners include Darton College in Albany, coached by former Columbus Blue Devil Scot Hemmings, and Chipola College in Florida.

According to Richard Carter, Perno gave Kyle his blessing to transfer and indicated he could come back to UGA for the 2014 season.

However, junior college players are immediately eligible for the MLB Draft, which could alter any plans to return to Athens.
