Valley accident claims life of elderly woman

VALLEY, AL (WTVM) - An accident in Valley, Alabama has claimed the life of a 76-year-old Cusseta woman who was a passenger in one of the vehicles.

Police say the driver was a 79-year-old woman.

The accident is still under investigation, but it appears this 79-year-old woman was traveling north on Highway 29 near Valley High School around 2:30 Sunday afternoon.

Investigators say she was in a Chevy SUV and attempting to take a left into the driveway of a home when she turned in front of an oncoming Ford Ranger traveling south on 29.

The driver's passenger, 76-year-old Peggy Sims, died later at Lanier Hospital. The driver was also treated for her injuries.

Police say they are trying to determine if the driver's age may have impaired her driving abilities.

"As of this point in the investigation it is not clear but that is something that is still being looked at," said Major Mike Reynolds with the Valley Police Department.

Major Reynolds says toxicology reports on both drivers involved in the accident are being performed.

He says once the investigation is complete, it will be presented to a Chambers County grand jury for them to decide if any charges  need to be filed.

If you are concerned about a friend or a family member and how their advancing age may be impacting their ability to drive a car, you can call your state trooper post. They can help you test your loved one to see if it is still safe for them to drive a car.
