Police capture Lee County fugitive wanted for robbery

PHENIX CITY, AL - A Lee County fugitive on the run for several weeks was caught Monday morning in Phenix City.

Officials arrested Tyler Dowling, age 18 of Smiths Station, on Lee County warrants for theft of property, burglary, robbery, and attempted murder.

Dowling was captured at a home on Lee Road 602.

The homeowner, William Hightower, age 38, was also arrested and charged with unlawful manufacturing of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and unlawful possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine). These charges came after law enforcement officers found an active meth lab inside the home.

Dowling's charges are from a Nov. 27 incident where the Lee County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from a home on Lee Road 117 in Opelika. The caller reported he had been robbed by three unknown males.

According to the victim, the suspects shot at him several times and hit him in the head with a handgun. They took his wallet, several swords, a guitar, and a shotgun before running away.

The victim suffered minor injuries during this burglary, robbery, and assault.

The other suspects in the robbery were caught several days after the crime.

Dowling is currently being held in the Lee County Detention Facility on a $138,000 bond.

Hightower is being held on a $33,000 bond.
