(WTVM) -

It's something you may have seen on Twitter or Facebook – a national movement to honor the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

It's called 26 Acts of Kindness.

NBC's Ann Curry started it three days ago for everyone to take a moment and perform an act of kindness in honor of the victims of the shooting.

The 26 acts of kindness movement is now showing up all over social media sites where people are sharing their acts, like donating to a charity or helping someone in need.

"I know that people feel helpless," said Diane Fletcher with the Cancer Coalition of South Georgia. "And yet they can do something, an act of kindness.  They may not be able to do something individually for those families that have been devastated, but they can do something locally, perhaps support a local charity."

The movement was first called 20 acts of kindness to honor the children killed in the mass shooting, but changed to 26 to include the adult victims.

Locally, an employee at Mrs. Story's Dairy Bar in Opelika says the business is taking donations as part of the 26 acts of kindness.

If you want to participate in the 26 acts of kindness, tell us about it by posting it on our Facebook page.
