Lee County investigators say it appears a Columbus man lost his life in the process of trying to steal power.
Lee County investigators say 37-year-old Richard Dickson of Columbus was found dead at the foot of a power poll located at a home on Lee Road 2071 around 6 p.m. Tuesday night. It appears he was electrocuted.
"Mr. Dickson did not live at the residence where this occurred," said Sheriff Jay Jones with the Lee County Sheriff's Office. "It appears he may have been paid to obtain power for this residence that did not have power."
Investigators say Dickson was not authorized to be working on the Alabama Power poll.
Evidence at the scene indicates he had some cables and was attempting to hook them to a transformer on the poll when he came into contact with a live wire, was electrocuted and fell to the ground.
The owners of the house were not at home while we were on the scene.
Sheriff Jones says it appears they had hired Dickson to help them steal power, but it does not appear Dickson was a licensed electrician.
Dickson's body has been sent for an autopsy.
Sheriff Jones says he does not know if charges will be filed against the homeowners, as this case remains under investigation.
