TAMPA, FL (WIS) -

The South Carolina Gamecocks have begun to practice in the lead up to next Tuesday's Outback Bowl match up with the Michigan Wolverines, and coach Steve Spurrier was quick to criticize his team's effort.

"It was a so-so practice this morning," said Spurrier. "The guys acted like they hadn't practiced in about five days. Hopefully we can pick the pace up a little bit tomorrow and the next day as we get ready for the game."

However, Spurrier still had glowing things to say about defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, calling the Gamecocks' All-American player a "free-spirited young man."

"But he pretty much does what we ask him to do all the time, being a good teammate and all of that. He's definitely as good of pass rusher as I've ever coached. He's definitely an NFL No. 1 prospect as they say," said Spurrier.

The Head Ball Coach also summarized what it's going to take for his team to come out on top of Michigan.

"They've got good players. We've got good players. Whoever plays the best will probably win it," said Spurrier. "You try to take care of the ball and not do things stupid, the way we did up at Florida this year."

The Gamecocks and the Wolverines kickoff on New Year's Day at 1 p.m. on ESPN.
