Strike in the Port City could affect Alabama

Posted: Updated:

A union leader says a possible strike by dockworkers in Mobile could affect the rest of Alabama.

Union Local 1410 president Mark Bass says about 800 members of the International Longshoremen's Association load ships and perform other jobs around Mobile's port.

He says those docks handle shipments for Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and other companies doing business in Alabama, so a walkout could have a ripple effect through the state.

Talks between dockworkers and shipping companies broke down Dec. 18. The current contract expires at midnight Sunday for workers on the East and Gulf coasts.

Bass says the union already is making preparations in case of a strike. Docks director Jimmy Lyons says talks continue and the situation is "very fluid."

The union has five locals in Mobile.
