PHOENIX (AP/CBS5) -

A homebuilt airplane that crashed in a San Diego County nature preserve, killing three members of an Arizona family, was owned by a Phoenix man.

The owner was 65-year-old William A. Stern, according to a Federal Aviation Administration registration number released Sunday.

Authorities said Stern was in the cockpit. He was flying home with his 53-year-old wife Jennifer, whose body was found in the front passenger seat, and their 19-year-old daughter Katey.

William Stern is owner of Stern Produce in Phoenix.

Witnesses saw the single-engine plane go down and strike a hillside Saturday in the Sycamore Canyon Open Space Preserve near Santee.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said the four-seat Lancair IV-P had departed from San Diego's Montgomery Field en route to Deer Valley Airport in Phoenix.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

The Lancair website says the IV-P is one of a series of aircraft kits that are no longer in production.
