An early morning brawl in downtown Columbus lands a Phenix City man in jail after he allegedly struck an officer in the face.

Police reported two officers were trying to break up a fight when LaEric Matthews, 20, struck one of them, Officer S. Hayes, in the mouth with a closed fist.

The blow burst the Officers lip, causing it to swell and bleed. Officers said Matthews continued to curse and threaten them.

Matthews is charged with felony obstruction.
