GADSDEN, AL (WBRC) -

Etowah County investigators have arrested a traveling carnival worker on child sex abuse charges.

Suspect George Michael Smith, a 30-year-old man from Eatonton, Ga., faces a felony charge of sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old.

The Etowah County Sheriff's Office says the alleged incident happened in Gadsden on July 17, 2012.

Investigator Haydyn Hedgspeth said Smith worked with a traveling carnival, "which moved frequently."

Multiple agencies, including the Etowah County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Marshals and the James M. Barrie Center for Children, aided in the investigation.

Smith was arrested by the Putman County Sheriff's Office from Georgia, according to Hedgspeth. He's now in custody at the Etowah County Detention Center on a bond of $10,000.
