COLUMBUS, GA -

The New Year means a new coroner for Muscogee County.

Buddy Bryan walked into his new position as Muscogee County Coroner as soon as we rang in the New Year on Tuesday.

"I feel extremely proud. It's a proud day for me and it's a proud day for the citizens of Columbus and the city of Columbus. I feel like I will be a great ambassador in this department," said Bryan.

Bryan said his first two days on the job were busy. The first call was early Tuesday morning to the shooting at Majestic Sports Bar that left one dead. Bryan said helping families of victims is a priority to him.

"I met with the family. That was my most important job was to sympathize with them and lead them in the right direction," said Bryan.

The new coroner said right now he is learning from the experience of the deputy coroners.  He was certified in December as a coroner after completing a 40-hour course of study.

By continuing his education and with decades of experience in the funeral home business, Bryan said he's confident in his capabilities in his new position.

"I hope to be in this position for three terms. Twelve years. I fully anticipate doing a great job, and as I mentioned earlier, just being a great ambassador for the city and the families," said Bryan.
