COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

There's a new reason to appreciate receiving gift cards for Christmas. Gift Card Weekend, a once-a-year event, starts this Friday from January 4-6.

Many retailers will offer special discounts to customers redeeming gift cards.

The creators of the event say 17 leading gift card companies are participating in the 2nd annual event. Retailers include Applebee’s, Bath and Body Works, Longhorn Steakhouse and Olive Garden.
