PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Phoenix firefighter suffered second- and third-degree burns while battling a fire at a vacant house Thursday morning.

The firefighter was taken to the Maricopa County Burn Unit with burns to a hand when the flames penetrated his glove. His condition was not available.

The fire began in the garage of the vacant house near 54th Lane and Cypress Road about 3:45 a.m. and began to spread into the kitchen before firefighters aggressively attacked and controlled the fire, according to Capt. Josh Segebarch.

The garage was destroyed, but no cause had been determined and the investigation was continuing, Segebarch said.
