There have been mixed reviews on the decision, and News Leader 9 has been investigating the circumstances behind Watkins' departure from Randolph County in January.

CLANTON, AL (WBRC) -

A Clanton mother who pleaded guilty to killing one of her sons and attempting to kill the other has received her sentence.

Judge John Bush sentenced Ann Marie Campbellto 30 years for the shooting death of her 11-year-old son and 20 years for the attempted murder of her 15-year-old son. The sentences are to run concurrently. Campbell will get credit for time served, which is over two years now, and she will be eligible for parole in 15 years.

Campbell arrived at the courthouse just before 8 a.m. on Thursday, not showing much emotion as she walked in. The sentencing itself lasted about seven minutes.

More than a dozen family members attended the sentencing. About three of them spoke to the judge and to Ann Campbell herself. Through tears, most of them had the same question: Why? Why did she shoot 11-year-old Johnny Michael Campbell three times?

Court records show during the shooting, Michael said "Mother, please don't shoot me again. I can't take it anymore." They also asked why she shot at her 15-year-old son, Bailey Mays, injuring him as he ran from their trailer home. The only answer Campbell could be heard saying was, "I don't know." Later, she said she wanted help and was sorry for what happened.

Family members say Bailey Mays is trying to move on with life and is doing somewhat well, but is still having difficulty talking about what he saw and experienced that day.

Ann Campbell has a 14-year-old daughter as well. She was not at home the day of the shooting.

Family members say, in spite of what has happened, both children still love their mom.
