Southerners contracting flu faster than rest of country

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The amount of people contracting the flu is gaining momentum this winter.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that U.S. flu cases for the week ending in December 29, 2012 had the biggest jump this season, and the flu is widespread in 41 states.

They also say the area with the highest amount of people contracting the flu is in the South.

Pharmacies throughout Columbus tell Newsleader 9 they have already seen a large number of people with the flu, and are expecting more to come.

They say the flu shot is the best protection against the flu, as well as trying to avoid those who are sick.

Washing your hands and taking zinc are other things you can also do to prevent contracting the virus.

Flu shots are available at your local CVS and Walgreens.
