RUSSELL COUNTY, AL (WTVM) -
News Leader 9 has reached out to the family of the teen accused of making a terror plot at his school. They were advised by their lawyer to not make any comments on the case.
But, his mother did say that her son, Derek Shrout, is a good boy.
Defense Attorney Jeremy Armstrong appeared with Shrout, 17, in a Russell County courtroom Monday afternoon where he pleaded not guilty to the attempted assault charges.
Shrout admitted to police he's a white supremacist who targeted victims because of the color of their skin.
The investigation is far from over, it is believed Shrout may have had other accomplices.
Investigators told News Leader 9 inside a journal that was found there were two different handwritings.
Shrout is currently out on bond, but is required to wear an ankle bracelet. He is also not allowed to have contact with anyone at his school and his internet use is limited.
Shrout is being charged as an adult.
