Witnesses speak in favor of alleged Majestic Sports Bar shooter

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

It's been a week since the shooting at Majestic Sports Bar on Cusseta Road.

Columbus police have been on an aggressive search for two suspects, one being Dequandrea Truitt, who turned himself in at the Huddle House on Victory Drive Sunday.

Several witnesses spoke up in Truitt's favor Tuesday morning, adamant he is not the shooter.

Columbus detective Katina Williams said Truitt told an officer he didn't murder anyone but did shoot outside the club. However, Defense Attorney Stacey Jackson said Truitt never made that statement.

Detective Williams said the shell casings found inside the club matched shell casings found outside the club; however, when asked the caliber of the gun by defense she said she could not remember.

News Leader 9's Brittany Dionne spoke with Truitt's mother, who said there's a definite reason her son is not the killer.

"Everybody got down, my son even got down," said Geneifer Truitt. "How can he shoot anybody with his right arm gone? They're acting like he's a mad killer. He's not a killer. He takes care of his kid. He's a young father. He doesn't have a record."

Truitt's mother is referring to an incident that happened a few weeks ago where she says he was shot in the right arm with a shotgun in Phenix City.

The defense said Truitt is right-handed and is unable to use his right arm.

Dequandrea Truitt is charged with two counts possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, aggravated assault, and murder. He is being held in the Muscogee County Jail with no bond.
