TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

The Arizona Cardinals have announced that vice president of player personnel Steve Keim has been tapped to become the team's next general manager.

The team will introduce Keim at a 3 p.m. press conference at its Tempe Training Facility.

Keim, who is 40, just concluded his 14th season with the Cardinals after joining the club as a college scout in 1999. He was promoted to vice president of player personnel in 2012 after previous promotions to director of player personnel in 2008 and director of college scouting in 2006.

Keim and the Cardinals have been commended for their successful draft classes, especially in recent years, team officials said. Pro Bowlers Patrick Peterson, Larry Fitzgerald, Darnell Dockett, Adrian Wilson and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie were acquired through those drafts.

Of the 37 players selected by the Cardinals since 2008, 25 remain with the team and 23 have started at least one game with the Cardinals.

A Harrisburg, PA, native, Keim was a two-time all ACC Conference selection as a guard at N.C. State. He started 36 consecutive games at left guard for the Wolfpack, was selected the offensive freshman of the year in 1991 and was a team captain as a senior.

He had a brief stint in pro football as a free agent with the Miami Dolphins (1996) and Edmonton Eskimos (1997) of the CFL before returning to N.C. State to work as a strength and conditioning coach.

Keim also assisted the recruiting coordinator with evaluations and serving as a liaison to NFL personnel scouting Wolfpack players.
