Testimony: Baby died from dehydration, bugs fed on her body

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A Columbus woman is on trial for the death of her infant daughter.

Jessica Shah was arrested in 2011 shortly after her teenage daughter made the gruesome discovery.

It was at a house on 3rd Avenue in Columbus investigators say 7-month-old Alejandra Molina suffered until she died; then, her dead body sat so long, bugs began to feed on her corpse.

Pictures of baby "Ale's" lifeless body were displayed on monitors. You could see marks on her skin- the prosecution said are bite marks.

Vincent Sampson, an investigator that worked the case, read transcripts from a previous hearing were Shah said the day the baby was found. She instructed her 14-year-old daughter to check on the baby as she was leaving the home to go to the bank.

When she returned, her 14-year-old was still asleep and had not checked on the baby.

Sampson testified Shah sent the teen to check on the baby. When she went in the baby's room, she found her dead under a blanket.

A child death specialist took the stand Wednesday afternoon; she said there were several alarming conditions inside the home.

She described the Alejandra's crib as "chaotic" due to a slew of toys all over the bed. She also said a teenager caring for a premature baby is not a good idea.

Investigators mentioned the home was very hot due to a broken air conditioner.
