Volunteer posse members to patrol schools

ANTHEM, AZ (CBS5) -

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is calling for volunteer posse members to patrol dozens of schools.

He says it'll prevent crime from happening and if something should happen an armed person can jump into action right away.

Anthem Elementary is one of 59 schools under the Maricopa County Sheriff's jurisdiction that volunteer posse members will patrol.

"To deter anybody that feels they can come into the school and cause havoc," Arpaio said.

"I think it's a great idea to have the posse visible," said Abby Simpkins, who has children who go to Anthem Elementary.

Arpaio said about 500 armed volunteers with 100 hours of extensive training will patrol the perimeter of the school.

"Same training as a regular deputy, same training. So they are well-trained. The only difference with them is they do it for nothing," said Arpaio.

He said they also go through extensive background checks also.

Posse members will not be on campus unless something bad happens. Shannon Nichols' child also goes to Anthem Elementary. She said a posse around her kid's school makes her feel more at ease.

"The presence of police officers and more deputies and posse around is going to deter people if they're going to create havoc," said Nichols.

But some parents don't think this goes far enough.

"I'd actually like to see some armed personnel within the school," said Ben Laird.

He plans to keep the patrol though the end of this school year.
