PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

Bond is set at $1 million for a convicted felon who's accused of shooting and wounding a Phoenix police officer.

Brandon McCabe made his initial court appearance Thursday. He's being held on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, misconduct involving weapons, criminal trespassing and resisting arrest.

Authorities say the 28-year-old McCabe is prohibited from possessing a firearm.

McCabe allegedly shot Phoenix policeman Peter "Chris" Bennett six times last Sunday night. The 36-year-old Bennett survived and is recovering from surgery to his face, right arm and right hip.

Police say Bennett approached McCabe in an area with a high burglary rate. They say McCabe ignored the officer's command and the two exchanged gunfire.

McCabe's first bullet hit Bennett in the face. A few more inches in a different direction and Bennett's life could have been over.

Court documents show the grave situation Bennett found himself in when McCabe, from the ground, pulled a gun from his waistband and shot the officer in the face.

A county prosecutor demanded a high bond be placed on the defendant as she elaborated on the horror that followed that first shot.

"The defendant got up and stood over the victim, firing the handgun repeatedly at the victim as he laid dazed on the street," the prosecutor said.

Already shot in the face, the following bullets hit the officer in his hip, arm and chest. Two of the rounds were stopped by his vest. Somehow Bennett had the strength and composure to fight back.

"The victim regained his senses and drew his gun and fired at the defendant, who ran west on Georgia," the prosecutor said.

McCabe was found hiding in a shed and arrested. He also was hospitalized with gunshot wounds to both hands.
