Residents say Carver Heights is good place to live despite crime

Posted: Updated:
Mary Martin has lived and worked in Carver Heights for the past 30 years. Martin is a beautician at Marion's Beauty Salon.  She has seen history unfold and the community change right before her eyes.

She says older people have moved out and younger people are moving in.

"They are letting themselves go down, they are letting the neighborhood go down, they are walking around like any thug on the street. This is not a thuggish neighborhood. This is where your teachers stayed. It was here where you wanted something good. You would say Carver Heights was the area," Martin said.

In fact, the shop that Mary works in was once a prominent hotel for black entertainers. It was owned by the Crowder family. The entire strip was known as Crowder Enterprises.

"They gave jobs to some of the blacks in the neighborhood and what have you. She taught a lot of us, she taught me. This building has a lot of beautiful people have come out of this building," Martin said.

Mary believes with new business the crime will fade away. Martin told News Leader 9 that she did know Columbus' latest murder victim Brenda Lowe and would often see her walking from the bus and corner store.

Mary, like others in the community, want to see things change in Carver Heights for the better.

"A lot of us are still here maintaining because we refuse to leave, because its an area that can be better and I'm not afraid of it and I will be here as long as I can."

Anyone with information on Brenda Lowe's murder is asked to call Columbus Police at 706-653-3400.
