OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) -
News Leader 9 is
following a fatal accident in Opelika on Highway 169.
Authorities say the
two-vehicle accident happened Friday morning in front of the Solo Gas Station.
Officers of the Opelika
Police Department responded to the 800 block of Crawford Road at approximately
10:25 a.m. to a reported traffic accident involving two vehicles.
A red 1995 Chevrolet
1500 pick-up truck was traveling south on Crawford Road. A gray 1987 Nissan
Pathfinder, traveling north on Crawford Road, turned left in front of the red
pick-up truck to enter a private driveway and the vehicles collided in the
roadway.
Both vehicles then left
the roadway. The Nissan Pathfinder rolled over after impact, partially ejecting
the driver before coming to rest on its side. The driver and sole occupant of
the pick-up, 66-year-old A.C. Miles, Jr. of Salem, AL was treated for minor
injuries on scene.
The driver and sole
occupant of the Nissan Pathfinder, 25-year-old Charles Shepard Martin III of
Opelika, was pronounced deceased on scene by Lee County Coroner Bill Harris at 10:33
a.m.
The accident remains
under investigation by the Opelika Police Department Traffic Homicide Unit.
