AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

Auburn narcotics officers made an unusual drug bust. Illegal drugs and suspicious candy are all a part of a new trend that agents fear may put innocent children in danger.

At first glance, the evidence recovered from Friday's traffic stop turned drug bust looks like a typical case. Officers found a handgun, cash, baggies, along with prescription pills, marijuana and other drugs.

What makes this bust unique is the homemade candy agents recovered from 34-year-old Keith Smith's car. Some of the candy is attached to sticks, so they look like suckers.

Some of the candy is shaped like stars and most of the bags are labeled with different flavors like pineapple and punch.

"Friday, the officer made the stop near Bee Hive Road at our West Tech Park. The officer thought he seemed to be nervous and called in our new drug dog. We located marijuana, coke, crack cocaine, meth, various prescription pills, Hydrocodone, Oxy, Zanix and a muscle relaxer. What was particularly disturbing was what appears to be homemade candy possibly laced with THC which is the active ingredient in marijuana. Forensic testing is being performed on the candy to confirm police suspicions," said Chief Tommy Dawson, Auburn Police Department

Chief Dawson believes lacing candy with THC is a dangerous new trend of getting high.
"If a small child got a hold of this thinking it was some candy it could put them in danger."

Chief Dawson told News Leader 9 It's important for parents to talk with their children about the dangerous of drugs and, now, apparently the dangers of certain candy. "I just want to remind parents to remind their children never take or eat anything from a person unless a parent or a teacher approves it."

Keith Smith, of Auburn, faces various drug charges along with possession of pistol without a permit. An additional charge of felon in possession of a firearm is pending.
