HAZARD, KY (WAVE) – Two family members are dead and third is in critical condition after a shooting on an eastern Kentucky campus.

According to the Kentucky EMA, the shooting happened at 5:56 p.m. Tuesday at Hazard Community and Technical College, a part of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.

Police said Caitlin Cornett, 20, and her uncle Jackie Cornett, 53, were with at least one child in a Pontiac at the college where they agreed to meet Dalton Stidom, 21.

The meeting was arranged so Stidom could exchange a young child he fathered with Caitlin Cornett.

According to police, Stidom fired a gun killing Caitlin Cornett and Jackie Cornett and critically injuring Jackie Cornett's daughter who was with them in the car. He then left the scene in his vehicle with the other young child and went home.

Soon after, Stidom and another family member went to a KSP post where he turned himself in.

Both Caitlin Cornett and Jackie Cornett were pronounced dead at the scene. A juvenile girl remains in an area hospital in critical condition.

The child Stidom left the scene with is uninjured and is under the care of social services.

Caitlin Cornett was a student at the school which was placed on lock-down, but it has since been lifted.

Police recovered a semi-automatic pistol from Stidom who is being held in the Kentucky River Regional Jail. He is currently facing two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

The Hazard Community and Technical College campus will be closed Wednesday, January 16. All other HCTC campuses will be open.

"Our thoughts and sympathy are with the families of the victims of this tragedy," said HCTC President Steve Greiner. "We are cooperating fully with the authorities and they have shared with us they do not believe the college was specifically targeted.  Fortunately our staff was prepared and responded quickly to secure our campus buildings to limit the impact of this shooting.  I am pleased with their response and I want to assure our students, staff and the community we will do all we can to maintain the safety and security of our college."
