JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi State Capitol doesn't look like a barn, and there were no opossums hanging from the rafters on Monday morning.

However, a "Saturday Night Live" Weekend Update has some people looking twice.

"Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant on Wednesday asked state legislators to declare President Obama's new gun control proposals illegal, though I'm not sure if the Mississippi state legislature has that kind of power since it's just 30 hissing possums in a barn," said SNL Host Seth Meyers Saturday night.

State Senator Sally Doty sent out a Tweet with a response of, "hissss," Saturday night. Doty didn't return calls from WLBT for comment. When asked, most lawmakers got a chuckle out of the SNL bit.

"It's a slur to Mississippi. That we're backwoods and other things. We do have opossums and I'm sure if you put 30 of them in a barn, they'd make a lot of racket," said Republican State Representative Gary Chism.

"It's crude but that's what "Saturday Night Live" does. They're a comedy show, that's what they do," said Governor Phil Bryant.

But don't let the joke lure you into believing anyone at the capitol is sleeping on the issue of gun control. Some legislators agree with several executive orders President Obama has made.

However, some republicans say they will "hiss," but not run away like an opossum if certain legislation clears Congress.

"Kind of tongue and cheek on Mississippi. We are kind of a rural state, still. We have a lot of gun owners. We are hunters," said Republican State Representative Bill Pigott.

While you won't find any marsupials in the halls of the capitol, there are plenty of lawmakers who say they are willing to stand up for the second amendment.
