ADDIS, LA (WAFB) -

The suspect in an armed robbery and hostage situation in West Baton Rouge Monday night was shot and killed by Addis police.

Authorities say just after 6 p.m. Monday, someone passing by Noah's Pharmacy in Brusly noticed someone wearing a ski mask enter the business. Police from Addis and Brusly met the suspect at the back door when he tried to leave. The suspect was holding a pillowcase full of money and another full of prescription drugs. They say once he saw officers, he immediately went back into the pharmacy and grabbed a female customer in the store and used her as a hostage to leave Noah's Pharmacy.

Police say when the suspect came out of the pharmacy, he was holding the hostage at gunpoint. The officers took cover and that is when he got into the Addis police cruiser with the hostage.

Officers began pursuing the suspect and hostage, who were headed down LA 1. Deputies from the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office blocked the road ahead. The chase ended with a crash on LA 1 at the Intracoastal Bridge. The police cruiser occupied by the suspect and the hostage rear-ended another vehicle and the police cruiser flipped.

Police were approaching the flipped police cruiser and say the suspect began making several threats to shoot the hostage and himself, who were both still in the vehicle. An Addis police officer then fired three shots, killing the suspect. The hostage is okay. The crash shut down LA 1 at the Intracoastal Bridge in both directions for about three hours.

Police are now searching for a woman who they believe was supposed to be the suspect's girlfriend and getaway driver.

A deputy spotted the woman behind the pharmacy and asked her for her identification. Police say she acted like she was looking through the dumpster. The suspect came out of the back door of the pharmacy to get inside the car and went back in to get the hostage.

When the suspect left in the police cruiser with the hostage, the alleged getaway driver left the scene. The woman is described as a black female with medium to light skin. She is in her mid-40s with shoulder-length hair. She was last seen driving a dark colored, two-door sports car, possibly a 2000 Pontiac Firebird, with a Louisiana temporary tag in the rear window of the driver's side.

"From my understanding, there was a very similar incident where employees were taped up when a pharmacy was robbed in Port Allen. And she played a part in it," said Brusly Police Chief Jamie Whaley.

Deputies believe the deceased suspect was linked to other pharmacy robberies in West Baton Rouge.

If you have any information on the suspected getaway driver, you are urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 344-7867.
