BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Authorities said a 2-year-old is dead after getting shot Monday evening by his teen brother who was playing with a gun.

The victim was identified as Travin Varise.

The Baton Rouge Police Department said Terrance Varise, 18, of Baton Rouge was booked into the parish prison on charges of negligent homicide, cruelty to a juvenile and felon in possession of a firearm.

Police said the shooting happened at the home where they lived on Jean Street around 6:30 p.m.

They added the shooting was accidental. The gun was only described as being a handgun.

Terrance was previously convicted on felony burglary in Iberville Parish.

Investigators said the toddler was taken to the hospital in critical condition and died Tuesday morning.
