BRUSLY, LA (WAFB) -

Police have identified the suspect who was shot and killed by an officer after an armed robbery, hostage situation and police chase.

The Brusly Police Department said the suspect was Ray Charles Hayes, 50, of Port Allen.

Police Chief Jamie Whaley said Hayes handed the workers at Noah's Pharmacy in Brusly a note indicating what drugs he wanted.

A passerby called police after seeing someone wearing a ski mask walk into the pharmacy. Officers with the Brusly and Addis police departments met the suspect at the back door when he tried to leave.

According to reports, he went back into the store after seeing police, grabbed a female customer and held her at gunpoint as a hostage so he could leave the store. They added he carried two pillowcases. One contained money and the other held drugs.

Police said the two drove off down LA 1 in an Addis Police Department unit and the chase ended in a crash at the Intracoastal Bridge. They said the police car with Hayes and hostage inside rear-ended another vehicle and flipped.

Authorities said Hayes threatened to shoot the hostage and himself while they were still inside the car after crashing. An officer with Addis PD reportedly shot the suspect, killing him. The hostage survived the ordeal.

Police are still searching for a woman who they believe was supposed to be the suspect's girlfriend and getaway driver.

The woman is described as a black female with medium to light skin. She is in her mid-40s with shoulder-length hair. She was last seen driving a dark colored, two-door sports car, possibly a 2000 Pontiac Firebird, with a Louisiana temporary tag in the rear window of the driver's side.
