ASU Trustee resigns from the board

Sawyer's resignation letter Sawyer's resignation letter

The only Alabama State University Board of Trustees member to vote against the recent separation agreement between the university and now former President Dr. Joseph Silver is no longer on the board.

Trustee Kathy Sawyer submitted a resignation letter to Alabama Governor Robert Bentley and resigned her position ten days ago, according to the letter, obtained by WSFA 12 News.

In her letter, Sawyer said that while she was honored to serve in the capacity of a board member at ASU, "for a number of reasons, I do not feel that I am able to continue to fulfill this responsibility that benefits both the University and me personally."

Sawyer spoke out against the handling of the situation surrounding Silver during the board meeting where trustees approved the separation agreement with him, ending a relationship that lasted only months.

ASU Board Chairman Elton Dean released a statement saying Sawyer's contributions while on the board were appreciated. "The University family is grateful for her time, effort and the service she provided to ASU. Although she has resigned from her position on the board, we look forward to her continued support of the University and will look forward to her providing any recommendations that are in the best interest of Alabama State University," Dean said.

"I want to thank Kathy Sawyer for her dedicated service to the Alabama State University," Governor Bentley reacted. "She has served with dignity and integrity. Kathy's commitment to public service and her strong work ethic were a benefit to the students, faculty and alumni. She will be missed."

Work to find Sawyer's replacement is under way, but governor's office says there is no timeline on an announcement naming that hire.

Sawyer served in state government and the Commissioner of the Department of Mental Health under former Governor Bob Riley.
