GUADALUPE, AZ (CBS5) -

A fifth-grade student is in custody after he allegedly tried to recruit other students to assist him in a stabbing plot at Frank Elementary in Guadalupe, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said.

The 10-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday after sheriff's deputies learned the student allegedly made threats to stab another student at school for snitching.

Sheriff's detectives said they were called to the elementary school at 8409 S. Avenida Del Yaqui by staff members who were notified of the alleged plot and found the student was carrying a knife in his backpack, according to a MCSO report.

Sheriff's detectives said the 10-year-old suspect admitted that he took the knife to school on Tuesday with the intention of stabbing the victim in the stomach.

"It was a 4-inch blade," Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said.

The suspect also said he was going to wear a black-knit beanie over his face in order to disguise his appearance, sheriff's detectives said. Deputies said the boy told them he reached out to other students to assist, but they ultimately reported the incident to teachers.

Detectives said they found the beanie wrapped around the knife in the student's backpack.

The boy was booked into the Maricopa County Juvenile Detention facility on charges of threatening and intimidating, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and disruption of an educational facility, all class three felonies.
