Muscogee County schools' custodial jobs could be outsourced

The Muscogee County School District is looking into cost cutting measures that could possibly eliminate custodial jobs at middle and high schools. This comes after a lengthy discussion at a work session that happened earlier this month.

During Tuesday night's school board meeting, it was decided that the district would move forward with outsourcing custodial services for middle and high schools in the county. That means that a contractor will be responsible for hiring the custodial staff in schools at the middle and high school level.

"Its an opportunity where all divisions are looking at their budgets the best possible solutions and any opportunities that there are for cost savings," Fuller said.

For current workers things still remain uncertain. If a contractor is chosen, we understand there will no longer be any full-time positions. At this point only temporary positions would be filled as opposed to hiring full-time positions if some were to leave their custodial job.

If a contractor does take over the middle and high school custodial jobs it is up to the contractors to decided if they want to re-hire workers already employed by the school district.

The school district is in the process of accepting bids from vendors interested in taking on the job in local middle and high schools.

The district is currently searching for 4 to 5 vendors and will narrow things down from there.
