SAN LUIS, AZ (CBS5) -

A 19-year-old Mexican man was taken into custody Thursday for stuffing heroin into a pair of sneakers and attempted to smuggle it into the U.S.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers referred Luis Humberto Hernandez-Romero for additional inspection of his vehicle at the San Luis, AZ, entry.

A CBP narcotics detection K-9 alerted to the presence of drugs inside of the vehicle.

Officers said they located 2 1/2 pounds of heroin, worth nearly $36,000, inside his shoes.

The drugs and vehicle were seized. Hernandez was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
