A 2.8 magnitude earthquake shook parts of East Texas early Tuesday morning.  KSLA News 12 has confirmed with the U.S. Geological Survey that the earthquake struck less than 2 miles south of Timpson, TX just around 6:30 a.m.

The USGS measured the earthquake's depth as about 5 kilometers below the surface.  A Shelby County Sheriff's official reported that the tremor lasted only a few seconds.  No reports of damage or injuries at this time.

This earthquake is the second tremor recorded in less than a week in East Texas.  Last Friday, seismometers detected a 4.1 magnitude earthquake, about 2 miles west of Timpson in Shelby County.

A 2.8 magnitude earthquake was reported in the same area in December. Eight quakes have been detected in the region since May 2012.
