MUSCOGEE COUNTY, GA (WTVM) -

Charles Youmans is one of several hundred people in Muscogee County itching to get their hands on a concealed weapons permit that will allow him to carry his handgun with him.

"I don't plan on using it not unless it's necessary," Youmans said.

Youmans works with the area prison and says from time to time he goes shooting but recently made the decision to make his weapon mobile.

"I'm going out of town next week on vacation and I'm going to take it with me for protection," he said.

Youmans isn't the only one making a mad dash to pick a permit. Muscogee County Probate Jude Marc D'Antonio says they usually see anywhere from 50 to 100 requests each month, and already this year they've seen more than double the usual amount.

"We are on course to set a record, as of today we've had 295 people apply for a concealed weapons carry permit this month," Judge D'Antonio said.

That number we are told has gone up even more since this afternoon bringing the total at last check to 297 permit requests. Judge D' Antonio says getting the permit isn't hard but their are specific requirements that you have to meet.

"You have to prove both a Muscogee County Resident and the way you do that is with your Muscogee County Drivers License showing your current Muscogee County Address," Judge D'Antonio said.

You also have to be a U.S. Citizen at least 21 years of age and pay the required fee of $73. A background check is also completed to check for drug or felony convictions.

Judge D'Antonio says that some of the new laws making their way through congress could require tougher background checks--- including looking into medical history for mental problems.

Gun owners like Youmans says these type of checks are a necessity.

"The problems I believe are mentally ill getting gun permits and going out and doing wrong things," Youmans said.
