DENHAM SPRINGS, LA (WAFB) -
A Denham Springs man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison after pleading no contest to drug charges. According to Assistant District attorney David Guidry, 37-year-old Jamie D. Cooper received the maximum possible penalty due to his multiple prior offenses.
Prior to his arrest on February 22, 2012, Cooper was recorded on video selling cocaine to an undercover narcotics agent, said Guidry. He was later arrested and booked into the Livingston Parish Jail for distribution of a schedule II controlled dangerous substance. On March 12, 2012, the defendant was released on $25,000 bail.
According to the second offense report, 10 days after his release on bail, on March 22, 2012, an officer from the Denham Springs Police Department was traveling on Martin Luther King, Jr., Drive, when he noticed the driver in the vehicle before him throw a small, clear, plastic bag, from the window.
The officer noted that the bag was filled with a white substance and immediately retrieved it. He discovered that there was what appeared to be a cocaine-based substance within. The officer then performed a traffic stop and identified the driver as Jamie Cooper. The defendant was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of a schedule II controlled dangerous substance.
Cooper was set for trial on January 29, when he chose to change his plea to no contest.
