AU helps students struggling with food insecurity

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

Students should never have to worry about where their next meal is going to come from, and Auburn University is stepping up to make sure that never happens.

Last week, the Division of Student Affairs opened AU's Campus Food Pantry to help students struggling with food insecurity.

"It's kind of been a win-win situation where we've been able to reach students that are in need, but we've also been able to touch the hearts of faculty, staff and students on campus that kind of want to help give back to our students," explains Katherine Hettinger, AU's Coordinator of Student Affairs and Case Management.

Hettinger and Tim King, the Coordinator for the Center of Community Service, have been working on the concept of the food pantry since April 2012.

"We're the Auburn family, we preach about that a lot so looking out for the students whether they're in a good situation or a bad situation, doing what we can to help them," says King.

The pantry's location is completely confidential and not open to the public.

Hettinger and King describe the process as a one-on-one situation, no one has to know you are utilizing the service.

"You shouldn't be ashamed. I think a lot of times there is a stigma for assistance, but we want to make sure we're helping keep them students."

The pantry operates exclusively on donations and welcomes anyone's help.

You may drop donations in Suite 3231 in the Student Center or contact Hettinger directly at 334-844-1423.
