PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The defense in the Jodi Arias murder trial on Wednesday tried to portray the victim, Travis Alexander, as a liar and cheat who deceived all his girlfriends.

Arias is accused of killing Alexander at his Mesa home in a jealous rage in 2008.

Her defense claims it was self-defense.

The defense continues its case at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Maricopa County Superior Court.

The first witness on the stand Wednesday was an ex-girlfriend of Alexander.

She testified that he did cheat on her with Arias.

"I felt that if we were to be in an exclusive relationship, neither he nor I should be testing, calling members of the opposite sex as often as he did," she testified.

"Did you ever have suspicions he might be cheating?" a defense attorney asked.

"Yes," she said.

Alexander was stabbed and slashed 27 times, shot in the forehead and had his throat slit.

If convicted, Arias could face the death penalty.
