BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A 30-year-old man was unable to escape when a Baton Rouge home caught fire Thursday night.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department said Jonas Spears died in a house fire that sparked in the 1600 block of 79th Avenue just before 10 p.m.

Responding firefighters found Spears's father in the burning home and pulled him to safety through a bathroom window.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, but investigators believe it started in the kitchen.

Firemen said the flames spread throughout the house and damaged nearly 60 percent of it.

The rest of the home was damaged by heavy smoke and the heat from the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
