WTVM 2/1/13 Editorial: Covering severe weather

Posted: Updated:
(WTVM) -

Severe weather moved through the area January 30 with numerous tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings.

Storm Team 9 immediately cut into programming for the first tornado warning that affected parts of Russell and Barbour counties and had coverage on our radio partner 107.3 FM, a live stream on wtvm.com, and coverage on social media.

Other local stations chose not to give their viewers such great service and opted not to put their weather people on the air during the warnings.

The National Weather Service doesn't issue tornado warnings without good reason and we take their opinion seriously.

If you wait until damage has been reported to go on television to warn people, you're too late.

We know that many of you are hearing those warnings today via social media, other television stations, or outdoor warnings sirens, and may be anxious about what you're hearing or seeing.

It's our policy to get on the air and stay there until the warning expires or the threat is over.

Our meteorologists are not there to scare you, but rather to sort through the facts and tell you exactly where the storm is, where it's moving, and what the threats are.

Our experienced team of meteorologists has this commitment for all tornado warnings that affect the viewing area - not just ones we pick and choose.

You, the viewer, deserve that kind of weather coverage and commitment - before, during, and after the storm - no matter where you live in the Chattahoochee Valley.
