WAVERLY, AL (WTVM) -

A man was murdered in Tallapoosa County this morning and neighbors said his own stepson was the one who pulled the trigger.  The suspect was arrested at about 9 p.m. Saturday by Opelika Police.

Authorities said Robert Lewis Black, 59, was pronounced dead at East Alabama Medical Center after he was shot by Tracey L. Beavers, 40, shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday at their home on Seals Street in Waverly, Alabama.

"There were a couple of unmarked police cars and some yellow tape surrounding the whole area and there were a lot of folks out there just seeing what was going on," said passerby, Matthew Anspach.

In the past, neighbors said Beavers has frequently been in trouble with the law, but his stepfather, Black, would always welcome him back into his home when Beavers was released from jail.  People who live in the area said Black went by his middle name.

"Lewis was a Vietnam veteran; that's where we connected," said neighbor, John Dennis, "We weren't all that close, but as far as neighbors go, he was a good neighbor.  We looked out for each other."

Neighbors believe Black was shot once in the head.

There are several other family members living in the home on Seals Street, but none wished to speak with news reporters about the incident.

Police combed the woods and surrounding properties looking for Beavers all day Saturday.

Beavers is currently in the Tallapoosa County Jail awaiting a bond hearing on the murder charge.
