CSU basketball player pens inspirational autobiography

Jermaine Morgan Jermaine Morgan
COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

At 6-foot 8 inches tall it's hard to imagine Columbus State University senior Jermaine Morgan not with a basketball in his hand, but a few short years ago basketball was the furthest thing from his mind.

"Hanging around the projects you conform to what you're around," Morgan said. "I saw the drugs, I saw the guns and the money; the materialistic things that you can gain from that lifestyle and I began to want those things."

Morgan grew up in Booker T. Washington Apartments in Columbus. He says his mother worked long hours to provide for the family giving him and his brother a lot of freedom to do as they pleased.

"My brother had a tattoo on his back that read P.O.M.E which means ‘Product of my environment.' Being that my mother had to work so often to provide for us, we really didn't have the proper guidance so that's what we became products of our environment," he said.

Morgan said he and his older brother Jeff slowly gravitated towards a life of crime, selling drugs to help pay bills. Morgan partied, sold drugs and eventually dropped out of high school.

However, he said it wasn't until 2007 that his best friend, Kollister Williams, was gunned down in a drive-by shooting that he finally woke up.

"At that time in my life, I began to feel vulnerable," he said. "I was no longer feeling invincible. I started feeling like I could be touched."

Eventually Morgan said he was touched but this time by an angel. He went back to church and rededicated his life to God.

He changed his life around and has become a self-published author, penning an autobiography called "Destiny Child."

"In my book I talk about how I was free but was in prison," he said. "I talk about how I was captivated in my mind. Kids not being able to see past the stop sign- there's a whole world out there."

Although his brother Jeff was murdered last year, Morgan stayed on a positive track. He said his book is a beacon of hope for the community

"Hopefully I can stand in the gap for the kids and the people in the community and allow them to see that you can make it out," he said. "I've done a lot. I've seen a lot of things that I didn't put in my book, but I'm here."
