AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

While most people were home watching the Super Bowl, gunfire erupted at local Opelika motel near Interstate 85, leaving one man wounded.

Around 7 p.m. Sunday, Opelika police responded to the Opelika Inn, formerly known at the Knight's Inn, on Columbus Parkway and found a 27-year-old male outside a room suffering from a gunshot wound.

"He was treated on scene and later flown to the Columbus Regional Medical Center where he is currently in critical condition," explains Captain Bruce DeLong of the Opelika Police Department.

Police need the public's help locating 21-year-old Aleecia Monique Pitts of Auburn, who was last seen fleeing the scene of the incident on foot.

"Several people heard arguing, we do not know who was involved in the argument and heard it was a single gunshot and then Miss Pitts was seen leaving the area and we would like to talk to her," says DeLong.

Pitts is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 143 pounds. She was last seen wearing dark clothing.

It is believed a handgun was used in the crime, but it is unknown at this time if Pitts is armed.

"If someone knows her whereabouts or think they know her whereabouts, please contact the police and let the police try to approach the individual, not to do it on your own," says DeLong, "Keep the individual inside if possible, get a description of the car she may be in and notify the police so we can handle it."

Luther Foreman has been staying at the Opelika Inn for five months. When he returned to the motel around midnight, he was shocked to see the activity near his room.

"I never seen that much blood so I was shook up, very shook up," explains Foreman.

The motive of this attempted murder is still unclear as well as the relationship between Pitts and the victims.

Anyone with information about the incident or the whereabouts of Pitts is encouraged to contact the Opelika Police Department Investigative Services Division at (334) 705-5220 or the Secret Witness Hotline at (334) 745-8665.
