BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The wife of Ashland's police chief has been charged in connection to the shooting that left the chief in critical condition.

Felecia Ann Davis, 42, is in custody in the Randolph County Jail after officials with the ABI charged her with attempted murder. Investigators say Davis shot her husband, Police Chief Benny Davis, in the chest around 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2.

Several law enforcement agencies responded to the scene of the shooting in the 400 block of Patty Lane in Ashland, including Ashland and Lineville police departments, the Clay County Sheriff's Office and Clay County Rescue Squad.

The Clay County Rescue Squad treated Chief Davis at the scene for a gunshot wound, then he was taken to UAB Hospital. Davis remains in critical, but stable, condition at UAB.

Davis was shot in the chest and the bullet cracked a rib, damaged his colon and lodged in his back, according to Ashland Mayor Larry Fetner. And while Davis remains in critical condition today, the mayor said he seemed more responsive.

The mayor said word of the shooting spread quickly in the small town.

"Of course, naturally it kind of surprised me. But we're in a small town, so the rumor had gotten out that that's what happened...but we didn't know. As long as they've been married, I didn't know of any trouble or dispute between them so I was really surprised," said Fetner.

Mayor Fetner says the chief and Felecia Davis have only been married a short time, but he would often see her accompany him to city council meetings.

Authorities say Felecia Davis is being held in Randolph County because she used to work at the Clay County Jail. She is being held on a $75,000 bond.
